CD Sampler #17 - 2015 Murder of Crows

CAW! CAW! CAW! As the crow flies; straight as an elfian arrow! Cawing all crows! You Crow? Is that 20 birds on a wire? A group of crows? No it’s called
“A Murder of Crows.” A murder of crows: the collective noun for a group of crows. A murder of crows reflects a time when groupings of many animals had colorful and poetic names. Other fun examples of “group” names include: An Ostentation of Peacocks, A Parliament of Owls, A Knot of Frogs and A Skulk of Foxes. So welcome to “A Murder of Crows!”
As I was enjoying our barn in Leelanau County, Michigan, I became aware of crows and how smart they are. I am also a fan of the FX television series “Justified” where the villains are named “Crowe” hence “You Crowe?” At 2014's Jazzfest I ran into Timothy Olyphant who is “Raylan” - the
Marshall on the series, grooving to Irma Thomas in the gospel tent and I made his day by asking him “You Crowe?” And finally another one of my favorite TV series, “Sons of Anarchy” ended its final season with a brilliant song called “A Murder of Crows” by The Forest Rangers (the show’s house band). So as the crow files! CAW! CAW! CAW!
Come join our murder!

Black crows in the meadow
Sleeping across a broad highway
Black crows in the meadow
Across a broad highway
Though it’s funny, honey
I just don’t feel much like a scare crow today — “Black Crow Blues,” Bob Dylan

There’s a crow flying back and ragged, tree to tree,
He’s black as the highway that’s leading me
Now he’s diving down
To pick up something shiny
I feel like that black crow
Flying in the blues sky — “Black Crow,”
Joni Mitchell

Sing a song of sixpence
A pocket full of rye
Four and twenty blackbirds
Baked in a pie
When the pie was opened
The birds began to sing
Wasn't that a dainty dish
To set before the king? — English
traditional, c.1744

We have crows baked in our “pie” from Chicago, the Motor City, Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin, Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee, San Francisco and Oakland, California, Clarksdale, Mississippi, New Orleans, Louisiana, Delaware, Ohio, Boston, New York City and Canada - open up our murder and let the crows sing!
