I founded the South Florida Blues Society in May 2002 after attending that year’s W.C. Handy Awards (what’s now called the Blues Music Awards), as an organization that I felt could unite a previously fragmented blues community. We try to keep blues artists and their art form going through Blues in the Schools programs, IBC local competitions, festival sponsorships, club gigs, an annual anniversary picnic, and by just going out to have fun enjoying live Blues music.
ecently we were extremely fortunate to have been involved with Nova Southeastern University’s First Annual International Blues Festival. It was a free three-day cultural event, extremely successful for everyone—fans, university, artists, community and the SFBS—especially for a first effort. It featured 33 national, regional, and local acts, on two alternating outdoor stages, plus an indoor acoustic venue.

We Offer a website, WWW.SOFLABLUES.ORG,
my weekly 60+ page BluesBlast (electronic newsletter), and the printed
Bluesletter to keep our members in the know. Tania Derby is our “calendar
girl’, who puts out the most complete and comprehensive blues calendar
to be found anywhere. We raised $6,200 for the American Red Cross Hurricane
Katrina Relief Fund. We also co-produced “Showcasing the Blues Vol.
II”, a CD sampler featuring the best of South Florida’s blues
artists, and annually host the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise pre-parties,
as well as partnering up with many local municipalities and private promoters
and their events, and more. We’re very proud, honored and humbled
to just have been named the 2008 Keeping the Blue Alive Award recipients.
